Adaptive Surfing FAQs

Who can take an adaptive surf lesson?

Adaptive lessons are intended for people with a range of disabilities and support needs. Contact Ocean Access Surf to discuss the participant’s experience, preferences, and access needs before choosing a lesson.

Does the participant need surfing experience?

No prior surfing experience is generally needed for an introductory lesson. Share any swimming or water experience when you get in touch so the team can discuss a suitable plan.

What should we bring to a lesson?

Plan to bring swimwear, a towel, water, and sun protection. Ask Ocean Access Surf what equipment is available and whether there is anything specific to bring for the participant’s needs.

Can a caregiver or family member attend?

Support from a caregiver or family member may be helpful, depending on the participant and lesson plan. Contact the school ahead of time to discuss who should attend and how they can support the session.

How do we talk about accessibility needs?

When you reach out, share what helps the participant feel comfortable and what support they may need. You can also ask about equipment, beach access, lesson timing, and any other questions before booking.

Surfing, Made More Accessible

Ocean Access Surf brings adaptive surfing to Providence, Rhode Island, so more people can experience the ocean on their own terms. Lessons can be shaped around a participant’s abilities, comfort, and support needs. The goal is simple: make time in the water feel approachable, active, and genuinely fun.

Every surfer has a different way of learning and moving. Before a lesson, participants and families can share what helps them feel prepared and supported. Instructors can use that information to plan a session, explain what to expect, and make space for questions. Together, the team works toward an enjoyable day at the beach.
